The problem is more something of I/O. CPUs have become so powerful that it
is actually faster to load a small, compressed file _and_ decompress it,
than to load the uncompressed file.

People _still_ use GIF? *shudders*

PNG was invented to overcome technical (256 colors) and non-technical
(Unisys bastards) issues, so you really should use PNG, which has a very
nice lossless mode.
