Edge detection and measuring lengths

Hi All,

Is it possible to use ImageJ to automatically detect edges in an image
and then measure the distance between the two edges?

I have written an image J macro that is called from some c code, this
uses the process->find edges command and then writes the image to a text
image file. But this doesn't really make the code aware of where the
edges are, it just allows me to see them.
