Defining positions on a line

Dear All,

I measured the perimeter of a section by drawing a line around it. I then
want to choose points along that line to take measurements. The position of
these points have been selected by a random number generator (e.g. 35
microns from the point of origin, etc.

My question is this:
How can I now find that point that I require given that the line I have
used initially to measure the perimeter is not straight?

If anyone can help me, it would be much appreciated.
