Thanks for your reply. The problem was indeed related to the size of
memory allocation.
When setting the maximum memmory allocation above the  value of 800 MB
the problem would occur, beneath it there was no problem.
As Wayne Rasband wrote I also tried to upgrade the Java Runtime Engine
to 1.5.0_06 to resolve the problem. This didn't help when upgrading with
the 32-bit JRE, but when upgrading with the Windows AMD64 executable it
resolved the problem. I have now 3000 MB as the Maximum memmory
allocation limit, and ImageJ seems to have no problems when running.
Although when I opened a lot of images, up to 2000 MB, ImageJ began to
run terrible slow and opening up more images seemed to fail without any
sign or warning.
