HELP:Automatic measruement of area

Hi

I have a student who wants to measure the size (total area) of the blood
vessels in the sheep eyes. He wants to do it "automatically", rather
than manually draw the ROIs and measure them one by one. A sample image
is available at the following URL.

My question is: Is it doable with the nature of such images?
