threshold stack

Hello,
    I have 20 images in a stack and I want to threshold all of them with the
same threshold, I tried to use auto threshold. But I am not sure what the auto
threshold does exactly, is it based on the averaged values of all the 20 images
? or just one of them? How could I find the optimum threshold value for all the
images in the stack?
