memory limit 444 MB

Dear members,

I have 64-bit imageJ on 64-bit ubuntu. I want to open a large image, and
hence I want to increase the memory allowed by imageJ.

 From Edit -> Options -> memory and thread , I tried to change the
current memory limit without success. I was reading about memory in the
manual and i found that 64-bits needs at least 1700 MB of RAM. Well how
comes my version uses only 444 MB, and that is the limit!
Any ideas?
