"Measure ROI curve" - width

Hello everybody!

I'm using Bob's Dougherty particle analyser and it helps me a lot!

Question about particle width..

I'm measuring cracks and here two examples:





I understand that it calculates width between most far points along the center line....but

I don't understand why according to measurement results in the first case width is measured not considering a branch to the right, when in second case it seems that algorithm calculates arc length considering the branch in the middle.

Hope it is understandable. Would appreciate if some one can make the thing clear.
