The memory issue is a little more complex.
ImageJ has 8 GB allocated with 64 bit Java in Windows 7. I just opened an image that was 2.6 GB. I cropped it to 1.7 GB. When I clicked on Composite it displayed fine and the memory monitor said 7.1 GB. When I switch back to Grayscale, the memory only dropped to 4.8 GB. Emptying the trash did not drop the memory. Then clicking on Composite again displayed the top of the image fine but the bottom is a strip of small versions of the image in grayscale.
http://www.flickr.com/photos/mcammer/8703172822/Switching back to Color or Grayscale gets rid of the small images along the bottom, so the raw data weren't corrupted.
