I have written a macro toolset for this, that offers different
options. You can find it here
http://dev.mri.cnrs.fr/projects/imagej-macros/wiki/Adipocytes_Tool
It is a quite general segmentation approach and you have to find the
right parameters to make it work with your images. If you use it with
watershed you might "over-estimate cells in the smallest size
category" (see publication above).
