Dear colleagues,
We have an open position at the LMSC for an image analysis specialist.
Please distribute (or apply) if you think you know somebody in your group or elsewhere that could be interested:
Staff Scientist: Image Processing and Analysis
The Light Microscopy and Screening Center (LMSC) of the ETH Zurich is one of the leading
academic core facilities in Switzerland offering access to advanced microscopy and highthroughput
screening instrumentation. Currently we have ~250 users, mostly coming from the life
sciences, but including researchers also from physics, material science etc. Due to strongly
increasing demand, the LMSC has recently set up the Data Analysis Unit (DAU) to support its users
in their data-analysis and image-processing needs. This unit is currently being built up and we are
looking for an image processing expert to strengthen our team.
Tasks will include 1) Basic support: Education of users in the fundamentals of image processing as
well as the usage of image processing packages (e.g. ICY, Fiji/ImageJ, Imaris); 2) Advanced
support: Development of customized software, as plugins or stand-alone applications, for imageanalysis
tasks at all levels; 3) Keeping current: Establishing contacts with research-groups
specialized in biological image-processing, participating in conferences, staying informed of
relevant new literature. While the position is primarily service driven, independent research activity
is strongly encouraged and (co-)supervision of Masters and PhD students is anticipated. In this
position, you will be exposed to a broad range of image-based research problems, many of which
can be solved with existing tools, others that will require some customization, and some that can
lead to the development of new methods and tools.
The suitable candidate holds a MSc/PhD degree in Computer Science/Physics/Biology or related
field. Programming/scripting skills in Matlab, Python, or similar, for image analysis and/or plugindevelopment
in ICY/Fiji/ImageJ is expected. Good communication skills (clear and fluent English)
and willingness to participate in teaching and research activities at quite different levels are
essential. The contract is initially for one year but can be prolonged with a possibility of becoming
permanent. The ETH Zurich offers a cutting-edge infrastructure, a highly international environment
and excellent working conditions.
Deadline for application: September 2nd, 2013.
Answers: Will be sent out by the end of September 2013.
Starting date: October 2013 (negotiable).
Please submit, in electronic format: A brief cover letter, CV, publication list, a short description of
your current and previous research interests, and the contact details of potential references to:
