Andrew,
I am not sure why it's loading so slow for you.  Have you tried opening the
images as a virtual stack?  That may not be what you want but it will
certainly load faster (at the cost of slower processing).  Also,  you might
want to close ImageJ and try opening the stack again.  I hope this helps a
little.
