Marcel, I have not been following your posts closely but there are a couple
of open source packages for serial communications: JavaComm, and RxTx.
I've used RxTx in Java on a computer without a serial port. I purchased an
inexpensive Seiral to USB converter (Digitus) which was recognized by
Ubuntu 12.04.
I wrote an event driven application to "talk" to a high tech camera's side
channel (just commands and responses, no image data). It was easy to do.

think. RxTx works with various OSs.
