opening stack images on imagej/fiji on mac

i have downloaded the mac version. updated everything, including java, loci etc.
but when i try to open an image stack lsm file or a czi file it opens only the first 1, 1.5 slices.
one time it opened the whole z stack but thats it. why does it happen? how can i fix it?
my computer has 8G memory and i have allocated 4G memory to the image j.
