if you wish to obtain the mathematical difference of the two images then use
Process > Image Calculator...
First convert both images to 32 bit, then use "Image Calculator..." with
"Operation" either "Difference" or "Subtract". The former mode results
in an image containing the absolute value of the difference of both
images. Finally, you may convert the result image to 8 bit.
