How to measure displacements in an image with an associated colored legend?

Hello,

i cannot find a way to measure the displacements in gifs;
I want to be able to measure the displacement with the measurement tools
of imageJ. How can i retrieve/restore the informations between legend
and image to measure the displacements?

Attached is the full field displacement of a specimen retrieved via
digitial image correlation. The range of the legend to the right is from
-0.5 to 1.25 mm.
