Image contrast and absolute and relative intensity

I have a question regarding altering the contrast of a specific image.  If i alter the contrast of a gel, does this change the absolute and/or relative intensity of the band?

For example, if I have a low and a high contrast image, will this change the intensities observed for each image at all?
