Measuring how far away an object is

Hi,
I need to measure how far something is in front of me using a picture looking towards a landscape. For example, the endzones in a football field is separated by 100 yards, and I want to be able to calculate with a picture how far that other endzone instead of walking the distance. Is this possible? I have see many calculations of distance or lengths when looking down on something, or looking from the top (such as taking a picture of a leaf on the ground and then measuring it's length).
It's application is that I am taking a picture of a mountain range, and I need to be able to calculate how far away certain objects or landmarks are from the spot of the camera.
