"Appearance" autoscaling tones

Dear List,
I’m trying to view 16-bit images so that these appear without being modified for display purposes. I would expect that setting the File>Appearance to 16-bits (versus Automatic) would then provide a view that reflects the true tonal values in the images: consistently dark images. As it is, if any image contains a bright white object the display shows a completely black background for a fluorescent image, but if an object is faint the background becomes dark gray and I can see readout noise (or whatever). I don’t want the tones in the image auto-scaled for viewing purposes. I would expect that setting the File> Appearance to 16-bits would eliminate auto-scaling of tones for display purposes.

I’m thinking it might be a problem with the Windows operating system or the graphic card? Does anyone else have this experience? I’m wanting to apply a custom LUT to these images and, as it is, the LUT applies colors variously over several images. Frustrating.

I’d very much appreciate any suggestions or feedback.

Thanks,
Jerry Sedgewick
