For those interested, here is a partial explanation:

I had IJ version 1.50h in my Maven dependencies - after changing this to 1.51a (and rebuilding) the problem disappeared. Could the 1.50h artefact be corrupted?

The problem is fixed: I downloaded a fresh ij.jar file and everything's working fine again.
Still strange ...
