Z projection output errors

I'm encountering an unusual error where it seems that segments of my image stack are repeated across a Z projection. It only seems to affect the min/max projections, and only certain image stacks are affected. I have not been able to identify anything unusual with the stacks in terms of which ones work and which ones don't.
Here's an example of a raw image:
Raw images are processed to subtract the background (by taking an average Z projection and subtracting it with the image calculator), a normal min projection of the output looks like this:
And here is the glitchy image:
Has anyone encountered something similar or have suggestions for what could be causing the issue?
