text editor for XML files in cell counter

Hello,

Can anyone recommend a text editor for altering xml files in the "cell counter" plugin.  I want to replace the z values with new values; I know that it is possible in word, but this is rather awkward given the number of z levels that need to be altered and I was hoping to be able to write some generic code to use on multiple files
