convert 8 bit to 16 bit

hii all

i wanted to convert an 8 bit image to 16 bit... i converted it by giving
image-type-16 bit...when i adjusted the brightness and contrast , its still
displaying in 0-255 range...
and when i manually varied it by giving SET 0-65535,...
the image wash off and disappears!!

is it possible to convert an 8 bit image to 16 bit with pixel values
0-65535,,


plz help!
