Reverse heat map

Hello,
I have some images that have been saved with a heat map where red is most
intense and black is least in terms of bioluminescence. There is a color
bar scale but I was wondering if it is possible to convert this to grey
scale (preserving the relative intensity values) not just converting to 8
bit.  Sincerely, Paul.
