The latest ImageJ daily build (1.52o15) adds a Dialog.createNonBlocking() macro function. Here is an example:

  Dialog.createNonBlocking("Crop");
  msg = "Create or modify an area selection\n"
     +"and then press \"OK\"";
  Dialog.addMessage(msg);
  Dialog.show();
  run("Crop”);
