particle measurements

Dear all,

I need to define amount of particles on a cylindrical surface with low contrast.
If I could measure the total area of the particles in the square image I would already be quite far because then I can estimate from the image size by the average particle size, but it's very hard for me to select the particles from the background.
I hope someone can give me some hints to solve this problem.
