Label axes?

Dear All,

By now is there a good way to label the axes of an image for a publication? I once wrote a label_image plugin, but it is a bit dated and it looks like I don't even have it on my plugins page now.

Related question: is there an easy way to convert a Plot into .pdf for a journal?
