I am not sure I understand the problem: the particles are all touching each
other, so they are difficult to resolve? If this is the case, try the
Wright's facility ImageJ plugins collection and manual, which describe how to
count particles that touch each other by applying a smart sequence of
different algorithms, including watershed.
