Camera for a Macintosh

Bill Ellis-2
We want to purchase a firewire or USB digital "black and white" camera to attach to our microscope.  We are running the latest Macintosh OS on all our Macs with the current version of imageJ.  Any suggestion would be GREATLY appreciated.

Thank you

We just installed an Olympus BX51M w/ QColor3 camera. The basic
QCapture software works great for acquiring the image. ImageJ does the
rest. Works great on our Mac's running 10.4.

Hi Bill,
I'm not sure of your budget but SPOT cameras have a good reputation
and work under Mac OS X see http://www.diaginc.com/cameras/
They can capture images either through their own software or via TWAIN
in ImageJ see http://www.diaginc.com/sup3rdParty.shtml
cheers,

Hi,
Whatever you buy, I suggest that you get a 100% assurance from the people who
sell you the camera that they will exchange it in case there are any dead
pixels. Make it a condition of purchase (of course, only if you think that it
is important).

Today I had an argument with a dealer about a camera we just bought which came
with a dead pixel (actually a 3x3 blue defect, brightest in the midde).
The salesperson argued that "just one pixel" is within the accepted
specification. It may well be acceptable for the selling party, but for the
price we paid, we want all the pixels to be functional.

They were *extremely* reluctant to do anything else other that reimbursing.
What kind of business is that?
Eventually they agreed to exchange it for another one they have in stock, so
we are waiting for it,  but if that one also has faulty pixels, they will
only reimburse, not replace further. Hard to believe, isn't it?
We are not talking about a 20 pounds webcam, but 2500 pounds.

My suggestion is to test it by grabbing a full resolution image (no binning)
without any lighting and with a long-ish exposure. Dead or malfunctional
pixels usually appear abnormaly bright compared to the rest. You then grab a
normally illuminated image and test whether the brightness at those locations
is also abnormal or whether the colour is shifted.

I hope it helps.

I have been using a 10 bit monochome firewire from SCION.  It seems
pretty good and fairly inexpensive.  The software runs as a plugin
that starts another program.  THAT interface could be a little less
"modal", but I like it anyway.  They also have 8 and 12 bit versions.

I have used it for brightfield and fluor work and I have been pleased
with the images.  (I also have a couple of higher end CCDs).  When I
first got the camera there were some dust motes under the coverglass,
so I sent it back to them and they did a good job of fixing the problem.

See it at: http://www.scioncorp.com/pages/product_prices.htm

I asked this question to Scion:

"Dear sir

I have an old (but still good) Mac G4 equipped with the LG3 frame grabber,
to do image acquisition through the old (but still good) Scion Image
software.

I want to upgrade my acquisition set up so I need some info.

I want to buy a Scion 12 bit firewire camera (CFW 1312C).  But I still want
to use my old Dage camera, the LG3 board and Scion Image.  If I update my
Mac 9 to Mac OSX (Panther) can I work with both Scion Image and the software
which comes with the Scion firewire camera (Visicapture)?

So far I received no answer.  Maybe Michael can give me some input since he
has been working with a Scion 10 bit monochrome firewire camera

Thanks in advance

I too have a Scion 8 bit color camera, which is not expensive and can
be also driven from ImageJ. Resolution is 1.3MP. We have also a Leica
firewire camera, with much more resolution and more expensive too.

SurfCharJ

Gary Chinga
Hi,

The new version of the SurfCharJ plugin has been released. The plugin
includes the options described in the ImageJ conference paper:
Chinga, G. and Dougherty, B.: "Quantification of surface structures".
ImageJ conference, Luxemboourg (2006).

Please let me know any comment and bug report.

Gary.
