Hello,
Fiji by ImageJ is outstanding software and I rely on it completely for all my image analysis. Thanks for putting together such a great package! My problem is that Fiji won't open on my computer any more. It worked on the first attempt, then I updated it, and after the update it failed to open again. It shows the splash screen of "Fiji" and then...nothing happens. I use a desktop with Windows 7 on it, and my latest Java version is version 6, Update 17. Should I update my Java or is this related to a different issue? Thanks for any help you can give me! Best, Paige Lacy, PhD University of Alberta |
Hey, try updating Java. It worked for me. :)

Hi Paige,
>It shows the splash screen of "Fiji" and then...nothing happens. There were a few hours yesterday where fresh Fiji downloads were broken due to a bug in the ImageJ updater[1] - resulting in an incomplete installation. The symptom you encountered sounds like the same problem, although we thought only new installations would be affected. Since your Fiji won't launch, the first thing I would try is simply downloading a new copy[2] - as we did fix the downloads (I just tested on Windows to confirm that the latest download is, indeed, complete). >my latest Java version is version 6, Update 17. Unless you used the "All platforms (no JRE)" download link, your Fiji download includes a bundled Java known to be compatible (version 6 update 24). But if a fresh download doesn't work for you, using Java 7 or 8 would likely be the next thing to try[3]. I'm deeply sorry for the inconvenience. Thank you for the kind words, and letting us know when you ran into problems. Hello Mark,
I tried running Fiji again today, and it wouldn’t load. Then I realized Google Chrome doesn’t support Java updates so I opened up my Internet Explorer to update my Java. I updated Java to version 8, update 45, which didn’t fix this – I still couldn’t get it to load.
So I deleted the Fiji folder and carried out a new download of Fiji (All platforms (no JREs) under Fiji continuous release, Windows 64-bit) and… it finally loaded!
It appears it was a problem with Google Chrome not supporting Java. I use Google Chrome for virtually all of my internet needs and wasn’t aware that my Java was so far out of date. I will have to remember to run Internet Explorer to get Java uploads.
Thanks for your help with this in any case. I thought I’d let you know this train of events in case others have this problem.
Cheers, Paige
