Subject: Egg identification

I have a colleague who is looking for input/help with this problem.
She works with nests that may contain eggs from more than one mother, and
is interested in trying to classify the pattern of spots on each egg , to
see if they are dependent on the mother. Her hope is that photographs of
eggs from known mothers can be digitized and compared with other eggs, to
look for consistant similarities.
Does anyone have any existing expertise on a similar problem, or ideas
about how to tackle it?
Thanks
