Since each pixel has 3 components, the most accurate color histogram is 3 dimensional. The "3D Color Inspector/Color Histogram" plugin, available on the website's plugin page, displays such 3 D histograms, with many options. I highly recommend it.
It is very informative. The histogram is shown in the colors of the values plotted. It also displays the image alongside the 3D histogram, and when you mouse over pixels on the image, a marker shows where in the histogram those pixels appear.

I would like to analyze an RGB image. I already have the value for red,
green and blue value for each pixel in the image and I know its % value
in the image. I sort the % value, to that I have the pixels whith the
same color information and the smallest % area on top of my list. The
further down the list, the more % area the pixels have. I can show the %
area of all pixels in a histogram. But when regarding the histogram I
have no idea which colors the curve represents.
Is there a plug in which combines a curve in a histogram with the
appropriate colors?
