Perhaps an artifact of encoding a greyscale image into lossy jpeg format?
You should not use jpegs for imaging work.

Hi Gabriel.

I tried with another image (both as TIFF and JPEG) but there was a very slight difference in the histograms and i didn't see the dotted lines in the JPEG image.
