How does the Volume Viewer rotate image stack

Xiaoxiong Xing
Dear ImageJ group,

I have difficulty in understanding how the Volume Viewer plugin rotates the
Image Stack.

According to my view, increasing the rotation of z always rotates the
volume clockwise, so the rotation of z is about a global Z axis which
points into the screen.

However, the plugin rotates the volume around a local X axis, which goes
through the center of the volume and has the direction of the X line drawn
by the plugin.

The rotation on y is the most confusing, sometimes around a global Y
pointing downward, sometimes around the local Y.

Anyone knows better how to interpret the rotation of x, y, z of this plugin?

Thanks,
Xiaoxiong
