Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Release 3

Michael Herron
Auto update on Mac OS 10.4 is telling me to install "Java 2 Platform,
Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Release 3"
Is this a good idea for ImageJ 1.34s   ?

Mark Burge
The default behavior of the update is to leave the current version of
Java as the default version and to make the 5.0 version available as
an alternative.  So, unless you specifically select the 5.0 version as
the new default (via an application in /applications/utility/java) it
will not make a difference.  The update automatically detects applets
and applications which do use the new 5.0 API and transparently
switches to the 5.0 JVM/API for those applets/applications.  ImageJ
does not make use of the 5.0 API - though it should work fine, and
possibly more efficiently with the new JVM.  If you are feeling
adventurous you could enable it via the above mentioned app, try it
out, and if it doesn't work switch back.

Kurt De Vos
I have been using 5.0 since the first developer preview release
because some of my plugins use 5.0 code (generics and such) and i
never had a problem.

Re: Java 2 Platform, Standard Edition (J2SE) 5.0 Release 3

Wayne Rasband
Java 5.0 on Mac OS X 10.4 has an annoying and frustrating bug than
sometimes causes ImageJ to ignore keyboard shortcuts. More information
about this bug is available at
"http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/docs/install/osx.html#bugs". It's item 8 on
the "Known Problems" list.
