Plot a profile derivative?

Hi all,

I'm thinking of creating a plugin/macro that will plot the derivative of a
line segment profile.  I guess it would take the typical profile, calculate
a fit, calculate the derivative, and then output a plot of the derivative.

Any chance there is something along these lines already out there, or does
anyone have ideas on some code?
