Question about ImageJ disappearing?

John Yeager
Hello everyone,

Am I going crazy? I have installed ImageJ on
several computers only to find, after a period of inactivity of about
six months, that ImageJ is no longer installed on my computer. This has
happened on a variety of PC's (all running Windows) over a period of a
few years. I could swear I've installed ImageJ at least four times on
my personal laptop over the last five years. Is this written into the
ImageJ program somewhere, or is it a Windows problem, or am I actually
going crazy / deleting programs in my sleep?

Thanks for your help!
John

I mean ImageJ is completely gone (including shortcuts). It doesn't show up in the software list or in program files, and searching my whole computer also returns nothing. I wonder if Gary had it right that installing Java updates somehow affects the program.

Cheers,
John

John,

ImageJ does not delete itself. When you say ImageJ is no longer installed on your computer do you mean it is no longer in the Start menu, or that the shortcut to it on the Desktop is missing, or that the ImageJ folder has been deleted, or all of the above?

Best regards,

-wayne

Apart from gnomes, another possibility might be that you are installing ImageJ inside a directory that gets replaced when something else is updated.  Were are you installing it?  I keep my copies at the top level of a drive (in Windows, or in Applications in OS-X) where I can easily keep an eye on them and find them to update plugins.

John,

is it possible that your machines are under remote maintenance by duteous systems administrators, who now and then - and perhaps even unknowingly - "clean up" (ghost) your installation?

Well, thanks for your input everyone. I will look into the auto updates my computer performs in an attempt to understand what's going on. But I do know now that it's not an ImageJ problem exactly, though why I never see other programs disappear I still can't explain.

Cheers,
John
