Re: Fractal dimension by ImageJ

Nirendra Mustafi
Hi there!

Can anybody tell me how to determine the fractal dimension by using
ImageJ? I am looking at the diesel particulates by using scanning
electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy. These
microscopies produce images that can be processed and analyzed by
ImageJ. However, I couldn't find options to determine the fractal
dimension from these images which are generally particle agglomerates
(composed of nano to micro size particles bonded together).

Regards and looking forward for the reply

Go to Analyze>Tools>Fractal Box Count...

Be aware that what you get in the SEM pictures is the "projected outline"
while in TEM it is the "sectioned outline". These are very different things.

In strict sense, the TEM sections are a better way to analyse the particle
irregularity because the section through the object corresponds to
its "zeroset" (you reduce the dimensions by 1). In general, you then can
extrapolate the dimension of the section +1 (i.e. D+1) as the dimension of
the particle in 3D. Not so with the projected outline.
I hope it helps
