Saving images to use in other programs

Hello All,
I need help saving or exporting images so that I can use them in publications. When I use "save as" I get files that will open in ImageJ but come up black in all other programs. I would also like to be save/export single images from a stack and not the whole stack. I thank you in advance for your assistance.

Try converting your black and white images to 8-bit first before saving as a .tiff file (or a jpeg file, but .tiff is preferred since there is no compression of the image information.). If you have colour, convert to RGB colour or 8-bit colour and then save as before. You should be able to open these images in programs such as Adobe illustrator. Be sure to save new copies of your images instead of overwriting the originals.
