Straighten plugin

Dear all,

I really like Eva Kocsis' Straighten plugin, and it seems to be quite
used for various purposes (bacteria, neuronal dendrites...).

The plugin is a bit old now, and I find it frustrating that it's so
"closed", i.e. everything has to be done inside the plugin window. Now
that ImageJ allows much more tool/function customization, would it be
possible to have the straighten plugin as a regular function, that can
be used on any segmented/curvilinear selection (with a parameter to set
the width of the resulting straightened image) ? It would thus be
possible to use it inside other macros/plugin as a step for quantification.

I'm not skilled enough to modify the plugin so heavily, but do anybody
likes the idea and feels like trying ? That would be great !
