Uncompressed AVIs are blank in Quicktime

Andrew Vaughan-2
Dear All.

I seem to be having a problem with generating AVIs in Image J. Whenever I use Save As>AVI and
open the AVI in Quicktime I get a blank movie. This is true whether I use JPEG, PNG or no
compression. I looked at the movie info in Quicktime to see if there were any codec format problems
but no format was listed, only a set of quotes - ". When I use Import>AVI the file opens correctly in
Image J, so this looks like some recent change to Quicktime. I have recently installed a DivX codec to
allow me to play certain AVIs from journal websites. I have not tried other installations of Quicktime
or other movie players yet. I am running Image J version 1.42a, Quicktime version 7.5.5 on an Intel
iMac running OS X 10.4.11.

I'd appreciate any advice.

Yours faithfully,

Andrew Vaughan.

Well, I've found what the problem was. I actually had the XVid Component for Quicktime
(http://www.apple.com/quicktime/resources/components.html) installed rather than the DiVX one I
mentioned earlier. Like I said, I needed this to view some AVI content on a journal's website.
Removing the component from the Quicktime folder in the Library folder solved my problem. AVIs
now work with JPEG, PNG and no compression. The component was version 1 alpha dating from 5th
October 2007, so I guess it needs tweaking.

Andrew.
