Using ij.jar with plugins

I have an existing image processing application and I would like to try
incorporating some of the ImageJ functionality into it.  However, it isn't
clear to me how to take advantage of the many plug-ins available for ImageJ
if I am just including the ij.jar file in my project.

Specifically, I've seen a number of plug-ins that open various image
formats.  How will (or how can I help) ImageJ find the additional jar files?
