What does blobs.gif represent?

Giorgio De Nunzio
Hi all,
a student of mine is using the well-known blobs.gif in a dissertation, to
demonstrate some image analysis procedures. I need some information on
what the image represents, and about the image author/owner, so the
student can describe what the blobs are, and give due credits.
Can someone help me?
Thanks
Giorgio

Dear Giorgio,

according to Meijster and Roerdink [1] the image represents "gold
particles". Not sure what image modality it is, I would speculate it comes
from either an x-ray or a transmission electron microscope.

cheers,
Mauro

Please note that the histogram of blobs.gif suggests that it only contains
5-bit data, and as such, it might not necessarily be a good example image
for the technique your student wants to demonstrate.

Ciao,
Johannes

Hi Johannes,
thanks for your kind reply!
The student is applying simple genetic algorithm driven segmentation techniques: she shows how to separate those particles that look united, by using a population of evolving ellipses (roughly modeling the single particles).
It worked great because she just needed blobs edges.
Thanks again!
Best regards
Giorgio
