Which states are best for a first travel nursing contract?

I'm getting ready to look for my first travel nursing contract, but I'm having a hard time deciding where to start. There are so many states and the pay can be very different depending on the location.

For a first assignment, would you prioritize states with lots of openings, lower living costs, or easier licensing? Are there any states you'd recommend for someone completely new to travel nursing?

For a first contract, I'd probably prioritize an easy transition over chasing the highest pay. Look at states where your specialty has plenty of openings, housing isn't too expensive, and licensing won't delay your start. If you have a multistate license, NLC states can make things simpler too. I usually check https://tlcnursing.com because you can compare current jobs by location, specialty, weekly pay, schedule, and contract length. Texas or Florida could be worth exploring with a compact license, but I'd compare actual openings and living costs before deciding.

I'd also consider staying relatively close to home for the first one. Your first assignment already comes with a new hospital, coworkers, systems, and routines, so adding a huge move can make it more stressful. Once you know how travel contracts work and what you like, you can be more adventurous with the next location.
