camera control?

Hugo A. M. Torres
Dear Listmates,

I am looking for any firewire microscope cameras that work with
linux? My labmates were considering buying a Leica DFC420, which
        costs a small fortune.

I was browsing the web and found a project called
        "micro-manager" which
might be able control microscopes and cameras under linux and
        uses
        imageJ to acquire images:
        http://www.micro-manager.org/overview.php

        1) Anyone uses this plugin set with this particular Leica
        Camera?

        2) With what camera specifications besides price and resolution
should I be concerned about when choosing a device?

        3) Any suggestions for good camera devices I should check?

        Thanks

Are there any particular reasons you are using Firewire?  Prosilica has
a line of GigE cameras that they support for linux which provide even
higher bandwidth than firewire.  They will also generally send you a
unit on a evaluation basis for a nominal security deposit.  Regardless
of what camera you end up with, I suggest asking for a demo model since
few vendors support linux.  Stay away from JAI/Pulnix - their linux
support is nonexistent and their cameras don't seem to conform to the
genicam/camlink standards so you can't use generic software.

Anyway, good luck!

What software can one grab images with, using these GigE cameras?

Thanks

You should talk to Nico Stuurman ([hidden email]) or Nenad Amodaj
about micro manager compatibility with this camera.

What I do know is that MM supports firewire cameras.  Have a look in MM wiki
at http://valelab.ucsf.edu/~nico/MMwiki/index.php/Dc1394

Hi,

there as with respect to Leica "FireWire" cameras I have to admit that
these cameras use the IEEE 1394
bus for data transmit, but are NOT DCAM compatible, so they will likely not
work with any third party
software (besides via Twain). (Firewire != DCAM!!) (I.e. it does not work
with the CMU software, so it also does not work
wit Matlab for ex.)

I do not know why the responsible "marketing department" came up with that
choice, but I´m a pretty embarrassed
as I´m forced to use foreign company´s cameras for some in house research
projects!
