The problem is that the .avi file format is just a container. You can
basically choose whatever codec you like for the contained movie, but
whether the player supports that codec is not guaranteed, even if "it
plays .avi".
At the moment, a lot of players seem to support H.264, which is
patent-encumbered, however. Another wide-spread choice is the DivX codec,
but that almost certainly requires a plugin for the player you want to
view the movie on.
In the near future, VP-8 (pushed by Google and potentially
patent-unencumbered) should be a sensible choice.
