scale when converting not full range?

samjlord
In Fiji, I recently tried converting a 16-bit image to 8-bit after unchecking "scale when converting" in Edit->Options->Conversion. I expected a nearly black image, because I thought it would rescale the entire 0-65535 range to 0-255. Instead, I got a completely white image. The image looked good when displayed from ~350-2000, so I expected a black image when I rescaled the full range to 0-255.

I thought that unchecking "scale when converting" meant that the entire 0-65535 range would be "rebinned" into only 0-255 gray tones. If that happened, then the image I had should appear almost completely black, with the 300-2000 range ending up mostly near zero when rebinned into only 256 bins. So why does the image appear white, with pixels only at 255?

No, by unchecking this ou keep the same range but only displaying between 0 - 255. As most (or all) of your intensities are above 255 the image will be white.
