Hi Jenny,

Sometimes, there is software that came with your camera.  Otherwise, I have
found a program called "Radvideo tools" to be very helpful.  They are a
gaming site, but have a fine converter system
http://www.radgametools.com/default.htm  Look at the box in the upper right
quadrant of the home page.   Be sure to convert to an Uncompressed format,
just to be sure.

If Joel's suggestion doesn't work for you, you could try VirtualDub (http://www.virtualdub.org/index.html ), a freeware which you can use to downsize and compress AVIs.
 
I haven't tried working with MPEGs but it states on the site that it can read MPEG-1 although it doesn't write them so it might be worth a go since you want AVI output.
