2 D surface roughness

Mike Calabrese
Hi,

I have a polished cross section of a rough surface with around 100um
features.  Is there a plug-in that  would characterize the roughness?
Min/max., average?    Maybe an Ra number?
I have tried the archives without much luck.

Thanks,

Mike

Mike,
Have you looked at the fractal plugins?  I don't use those plugins myself but I have used fractal analysis for similar work.

Why not applying the formula of roughness?

1. Mean with adequate radius
2. Difference to the original (squared)
3. Mean with same radius used in 1.step delivers (for each point) the mean roughness Ra (square root Rq)

Hi Mike,

Maybe try to measure the texture (Grey-Level Co-occurrence Matrix).
https://github.com/cmci/GLCM2/tree/master/target

This plugin is based on Toby Cornish's plugin that is based on the Texture
analysis plugin written by  Julio E. Cabrera
http://tobycornish.com/downloads/imagej/

For some more details on the principle and backgrounds see:
The GLCM Tutorial Home Page
http://www.fp.ucalgary.ca/mhallbey/tutorial.htm

cheers,
Kota
