How to cite ImageJ plugins in a publication?

Isaac Perez
Greetings.

When ImageJ quoted in a publication, and mentions a specific plugin,
how should be the citation or reference?.

Is it enough to just cite ImageJ or should be a specific reference to
the author of the plugin? ... How it is in the latter case?

How specific I can quote a ImageJ plugin in an article or publication?

hi
I generally cite the name of the plugin and the web site reference, in case with
the date of download. Than in the reference list you can cite the site too.
Hope it's useful
best wishes

This is covered in the FAQs, so please see there.
I would encourage to cite both the plugin name AND the author. Otherwise it
might not possible to know what you are reporting. There have been some very
similar names and it can become confusing. In addition you should acknowledge
the work of others, if you are benefiting from it.

Cheers

In many cases, there are publications behind those plugins (see e.g. the
first section of http://fiji.sc/Stitching). I would highly recommend
citing those papers, to help the plugin authors secure future funding.

I do not think that the hard work of the plugin authors -- and especially
their willingness to share the plugin in a truly open, scientific spirit
-- would be acknowledged enough if you only cited ImageJ.

If you click on the "Cited by 87" link under the first hit of

http://scholar.google.com/scholar?hl=en&q=%22Globally+optimal+stitching+of+tiled+3D+microscopic+image+acquisitions%22&btnG=&as_sdt=1%2C50&as_sdtp=

you should get a good idea just how specific you can (and should) quote.
